Fergus Byett is a pianist and composer based in Hamilton. He completed his Bachelors of Music with First-Class Honours in 2022 under the tutelage of Katherine Austin, and he is now pursuing his Masters in Piano Performance with Dr. Rae de Lisle. He is a previous winner of the UoW Chamber Music Competition, a finalist in the UoW Concerto Competition and he was a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholar for the duration of his undergraduate studies. Fergus is an award-winning composer; his choral and orchestral compositions have won several national competitions. He has recently received commissions from Cantando Choir, Southwell School choir and the Taupō Concert Band. His mass setting in te reo Māori is frequently sung by the St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir, and in 2022 he completed the score for a short film. Fergus is a keen amateur chorister, singing bass in the St. Peter’s Cathedral Choir and the Hamilton Civic Choir. In 2023, Fergus will also be conducting the Cathedral Singers, as well as the Hamilton Civic Choir through its Artist Development Programme.
