This special concert features the very talented Mathias Balzat (cello)  accompanied on the piano by the equally talented Vivian Balzat. Matthias is currently completing his masters degree at the Robert Schumann Hochschule für Musik in Düsseldorf, Germany under Professor Pieter Wispelweij.

He and Vivian played for us in February 2018, when Matthias was still a student at the Waikato Conservatorium, We said then that "Mathias is well on the way to developing his musical career", and that has certainly proved to be true.

For example, earlier this year he received first prize (Sieghardt Rometsch Wettbewerb) in the Robert Schumann Hochschule concerto competition. He has received numerous other first and second prizes in major competitions, both national and international, including the ROSL Annual Music Competition Strings Winner, in London; ROSL Chamber Music Scholarship Winner, in New Zealand; Winner of the New Zealand National Concerto Competition, twice; Winner of Sieghardt-Rometsch Instrumental Competition; Winner of NZ’s “Creative Performing Arts Person of the Year” award.

Matthias can be found on stage throughout Europe, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, and more, and is a seasoned performer as both a soloist and chamber musician, performing a large repertoire including several contemporary works commissioned for him. He is also a member of the Ares Trio.
