Kauri, Jessie and Jacqui make up a trio from the University of Waikato who have made numerous performances together around the North Island.
They have been playing together since the beginning of 2022, and were the recent winners of the G.E. Fairburn Prize for Chamber Music Performance.
Kauri May began playing the violin at the age of three. She is currently in her honours year of her BMus degree at the University of Waikato, studying under the tutelage of Lara Hall.
She was winner of both the university concerto competition and Bach competition this year. She also won a full fellowship award to attend the Miami Music Festival and served as associate concert master for the orchestra. Last year, she was selected as a violinist for the Troubadour quartet for the International Adam Chamber Festival. Kauri hopes to continue her studies next year overseas.
Jessie Lee is in her last year of bachelor of music majoring in piano performance with Katherine Austin. Jessie has done a variety of collaborative music including chamber, accompanying singers and instrumentalist. Jessie has participated in the lieder festival that is held by the music department at Waikato university. In 2021 she along side her chamber partner came runner up in the chamber competition, and recently took place in the chambers competition this year. Outside university hours, Jessie enjoys being a percussionist and has participated in many concerts with Waikato youth orchestra and now currently participating as a tutor and member in the symphonic youth band.
Jacqui McPherson is in her third year at the University of Waikato, studying towards a conjoint Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance under the tutelage of Luca Manghi. She was principal flautist in New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds for multiple years, has played flute and piccolo in the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, and recently performed in the NZSO’s family concerts. She has been the recipient of several scholarships, and has been a finalist in multiple university competitions. During her study she has been awarded a cultural Blues award multiple years in a row, as well as the Norah Howell music award in 2020.
