Competition Preview

This concert is an opportunity to experience the talent of two outstanding young cellists, Kimberley Yuan and Hyein Kim in their final preparation concert for the forthcoming Sir Michael Hill National String Competition. This competition has invited 15 of the best New Zealand string players under the age of 26, to compete for wonderful cash prizes and is a replacement competition for Sir Michael's International Violin Competition that has been suspended due to Covid.

Hyein Kim and Kimberley Yuan are both students of James Tennant at the University of Waikato and have both had success nationally and internationally in the competition world. Most recently Hyein Kim won the Gisborne International Music Comp 1st prize and came 2nd in the National Concerto Competition for the 3rd time in June. He is a 4th year student with plans to head to Germany to further his studies next year. Kimberley Yuan is a 1st year student at Waikato and has already had many experiences performing at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sydney Opera House, both resulting from competition successes.

Their programme features a wide array of musical styles, coupled with some of the most moving of pieces written for the cello. Rachmaninoff is represented with 2 glorious moments, his famous Vocalise and the slow movement from his 3rd cello sonata. Also there are 2 deeply moving works inspired by Jewish themes by Ernst Bloch: his Prayer and more famously Kol Nidre. These are enclosed with flashy Paganini and Cassado alongside some Beethoven and Bach and a very intriguing work by the Chinese/American composer Bright Sheng.

Hyein and Kimberley will be accompanied by the Francis Cowan, well known to regular Morandini House Concertgoers.

It promises to be an exciting and fascinating evening of music.
