Nathaniel Smorti

Clarinet player and accomplished pianist, Nathaniel is in his second year of a Bachelor of Music. At just 18 years old, he has already enjoyed considerable academic and musical achievements. In 2007, aged 14, he completed Year 13 at Lake Taupo Christian School, winning the top academic award, and went on to train as a teacher's aid, serving four months in Vanuatu where he taught music and other subjects voluntarily. Nathaniel has consistently won top school and regional awards in music and last year performed regularly around the Waikato region playing clarinet. He was also principal clarinet of the United Youth Orchestra, joint principal of the Waikato University Chamber Orchestra, and played for Trust Symphony Orchestra.

This year he has played with Opus and is becoming seriously involved in competitive performance, alongside his studies and teaching clarinet at the Hamilton Community Centre of Music. Nathaniel has his sights set on becoming a professional touring performer, following post-graduate study overseas.
